Train and Retain.

In her article "1 Newspaper. 3 Students.", Mary Ann Pearson addresses the issues and provides ideas from dealing with recruitment for campus publications. Pearson breaks down her article into seven strategies. Most of these were mostly directed toward recruiting from non-college sources such as high schools. However, her ideas can be modified and used for college purposes.

These ideas are for our purposes could be translated as:
1- Constructing a creative, welcoming atmosphere.
2- Evaluating the strengths/weaknesses of your team.
3- Be organized.
4- Connect with upward moving students.
5- Recruit from a variety of years (Freshman, Sophomores, etc)
6- Have an Open House event to showcase/promote the organizations.
7- Explore talents!

Using these strategies, we can definitely have a solid base for making WPRK, The Sandspur, and R-TV noticed on campus. An idea for promoting all three together rather than separately might be to have an 'open house' even where students can come, learn more, and see where they feel at home in our campus media outlets.

  1. Suggestions on how to make an open house work when the three orgs are on different floors?
